And, in some cases, corruption hides behind incompetence, according to Elizabeth Gitari, a legal officer at Wildlife Direct in Kenya. The cartels operate on the basis of “take the money or the bullet,” causing many officials to turn a blind eye to their activities.įavors or power may be traded in addition to money. More seriously, historians themselves - including some of those under attack - have proved sometimes to be clumsy defenders of their work.Īs one of the reigning doyens of the profession, Stuart Macintyre has sought to instil reason and civility into the public debate. It has become clear that the general public has a poor understanding of its methods, safeguards and essential qualifications - not helped by the gratuitous pronouncements of editorial writers and, worse, of radio shock jocks. As so often before, indigenous Australians have been collateral victims.Īrguably, the greatest assault has been on the discipline and practice of history itself. There has been a tearing down of academic reputations, especially in the attacks on the pioneering work of Lyndall Ryan and Henry Reynolds. One was the effective removal of the director of the National Museum of Australia. The dispute has raged in the leaders and columns of the daily newspapers, it has divided colleagues and it has roused the ire of politicians and the public at large. ![]() The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() "The Sign of Four" was filmed in 35mm with a lavish (for TV) budget and presents a convincing vision of Holmes's world, from the cluttered Victorian furnishings to a steam launch chase down the Thames. And it stars what might be the best Holmes and Watson to ever appear onscreen, Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. This version of "The Sign of Four" is the closest anyone has come to transferring the spirit and letter of Doyle's stories to film. ![]() Conor kostick books5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() After dying, yet again, and crushing his family’s hopes for his advancement in Epic, Erik creates a ridiculously attractive female character and puts all of his points into beauty, a skill that no one else ever considers because it is a useless stat from a fighter’s standpoint. ![]() Almost everyone in Erik’s society kills kobalds and other low level monsters every day, to gather pennies to improve their online characters and, therefore, their society.
